The Rice Media Center celebrates its 50th anniversary with an exhibition of Geoff Winningham’s 1970-71 photographs of professional wrestling in the Houston Coliseum. Timed to coincide with the publication of the second edition of his 1971 book, Friday Night in the Coliseum, the show features over 200 contemporary and historical photographs, transcripts of interviews with wrestlers and wrestling fans, as well as Winningham’s rarely-seen 16mm black and white film of the wrestling scene in Houston in the early 1970’s.
The Visual and Dramatic Arts department at Rice University is pleased to announce its first fall exhibition, In/Between | A Rock and a Hard Place: Visions from the Ghost World of how to Survive One's Sovereignty of Self Destruction in a Land We Assumed We Once Knew by Photography Lecturer Justin Raphael Roykovich. The opening reception will take place at the Rice Media Center Gallery on September 5, 2019 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.
The 56th Annual Student Exhibition, featuring work in diverse media by senior and undergraduate Visual and Dramatic Arts majors, will open Thursday, April 18th at 6:00 p.m. The exhibition will include an awards ceremony and reception, with the awards ceremony beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the Visual & Dramatic Arts Film Auditorium. The undergraduate show is curated by VADA Professor of Printmaking and Drawing Karin Broker. The awards will be followed by the student film showcase "Flicks 2019" in the Visual & Dramatic Arts Film Auditorium. In the Visual & Dramatic Arts Project Gallery, our audience may enjoy even more student films during the opening ceremony and during regular gallery hours.
The Visual and Dramatic Arts Department at Rice University is pleased to present “Business & Pleasure, Fifty Years of Photographs” by Paul Hester with an opening reception on January 17, 2019, from 6-8 PM at the Rice Media Center Gallery. The photography instructor emeritus is sharing fifty years of his professional and personal life through a wide assortment of photographs from film and digital cameras.
The Department of Visual and Dramatic Arts (VADA) at Rice is pleased to announce the first spring exhibition Works on Paper 2009-2019 by Randall McCabe, artist and long-time shop supervisor for the department who retired in May of 2019. Works on Paper 2009 - 2019 will have an opening reception at the Rice Media Center Gallery on Thursday, January 16 from 6:00 – 8:00PM.
"The Rabbit Hunt" is a multimedia exhibition by filmmakers Patrick Bresnan and Ivete Lucas opening at the Rice Media Center Nov. 8 from 6 to 8 p.m. The exhibition will be followed by the opening of the Houston Cinema Arts Society’s Film Festival, now in its 10th year.
The Visual and Dramatic Arts department at Rice University is pleased to host Mexico City artist Agustín Estrada. His exhibition is titled, “Shizen: On the Art of Looking at Nature”. The artist explains that, ‘the first word is the Japanese word for Nature, because it is not only about gardens but more about two Japanese phenomena related with the Art of looking at Nature with two particular concepts called “Hanami” and “Momiji” the first one related to flowers blooming in the early spring and the second one with the changing color of the leaves in autumn. Both clearly identified in Japanese culture.’
